21.Espresso Coffee Maker

An espresso machine is used to make shots of strong, thick coffee that are the basis for espresso-based drinks such as cappucino and cafe latte.21.espresso coffee maker A skilled espresso maker, or barista, can manipulate several variables in the process to produce a quality shot of espresso that is full-flavored and dense with a rich crema (a foamy head that resembles the head on a beer) on top. Those expensive espresso machines you see at coffee shops are designed to regulate several variables, including the temperature of the water and the pressure of the water through the tightly packed, finely ground espresso beans. A basic stovetop espresso maker such as the Moka pot can be used at home, but it doesn't provide precise control over these variables and is difficult to get high enough pressure to make a quality shot.

The simplest stovetop espresso maker is a metal pot that's called a "Moka" or, in the United States, a Bialetti.21.espresso coffee maker It consists of three chambers: a bottom one that holds water, a middle one with a filter-basket and a metal filter that screws on to the bottom of the pot, and a top chamber where the espresso funnels into small cups. The design makes use of steam pressure from the heating of the bottom chamber to force hot water through the grounds and out of the spouts. The Moka pot won't produce the thick, flavorful espresso you get in an Italian bar, but it can be a good alternative when you want to brew a cup of strong espresso for yourself or a few friends.

There are a few things you need to do before you start using your Moka pot.21.espresso coffee maker First, fill the bottom chamber with cold water. Stumptown Coffee recommends preheating the water to a temperature just below boiling, but I've found that it doesn't make any difference. Once the water is in, screw the pot on. Be sure to hold the pot with its body, not its handle—the handles can break and may become a safety hazard. Place the pot over a low flame.

When the lights on the front panel indicate that the heating vessel has heated the water to the ideal temperature, pour the ground espresso into the filter-basket and tamp it down. After the water has been filtered by the metal filter, it's ready to pour into your small cups. Depending on how full you want your cups, you can add sugar to the mixture before serving—the amount needed will vary with personal preference. After your espresso has been poured, stir it to aerate the mixture and encourage a creamy head of crema. To make lattes or other drinks that require milk, you can also use the steaming wand to heat and froth a small amount of milk before adding it to your espresso.
